SaskPower will spend $71 million over the next four years to modernize a hydro-electric dam on the South Saskatchewan River system, the Crown power provider announced Tuesday.

The Coteau Creek Power Station was built in 1969 on the outlet from the Diefenbaker Lake near the Gardiner Dam and Elbow, Sask. It is capable of producing 186 megawatts of electricity.

A release from SaskPower states the project is part of its commitment to produce an increased amount of emission-free electricity.

Spending plans include $59 million to repair all three generators and replace mechanical and power systems. A further $12 million will modernize control room, fencing, security and ventilation. A new warehouse will be built next year.
