Medicine Hat’s Be YOUth centre wants all young people to know it is open to assist them.
The Be YOUth centre will be hosting an open house on Sept. 10 to showcase programs and show they are wide open. There will be a silent auction fundraiser and an opportunity to meet staff and take a tour of the building.
“The open house is more like a meet and greet,” said executive director Amanda Sears. “We just happen to be doing those fundraisers at the same time. It’s more to engage the youth and get more youth coming to the centre.”
Sears says the centre was down about half the kids they expected over the summer and says there were kids who did not know where the centre was or the programs offered. The Be YOUth centre provides a safe environment for those aged 11-17 with a variety of programs, including a three-times-a-week free meal program, homework program arts and crafts, sports and more.
“We’re just trying to get our name out … that’s the main thing,” Sears said.
The centre is also running a raffle with items donated from business in the community with all proceeds going back into the centre. A Norco bike donated by Toyota, an area rug from Main Floor Carpets and a one night stay courtesy of Days Inn are available via the raffle. Tickets will be available at the centre during the open house and anytime at the centre.
The open house will run from 4-6 p.m. at the Be YOUth Centre, located at 1201 Kingsway Ave.
“We want as many youths from as many backgrounds to come and just have fun and enjoy our free activities.”
