Young girl found safe after spending night lost in Cypress Hills woods

A six-year-old girl lost in the woods overnight in the Cypress Hills was found safe just after 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, the Redcliff RCMP detachment announced at that time.

The search elicited a strong response on social media throughout the morning, with many Hatters and others in the area offering to join the search effort.

The girl was last seen Wednesday evening at which point she did not return after playing with a sibling in a field near the family’s campsite at Lodgepole campground, located south and up steep terrain from the Elkwater townsite.

She was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt, while temperatures fell to single digits overnight in the region.

RCMP officers from Redcliff and Bow Island, and Alberta Sheriffs as well conducted the evening search.

Joining the effort early Thursday were Cypress County bylaw officers, Fish and Wildlife Officers, search and rescue society, and HALO air rescue helicopter.

Officials also said they had numerous volunteers and dissuaded more people from coming to the area.

Officials from the Southeast Alberta Search and Rescue Society told the News that groups were comprised of individuals of several organizations.

They would not release more information but said the were pleased the search had a happy conclusion.
