Two Medicine Hat men arrested and charged in million-dollar stolen camper ring

https://www.medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews Police say they have broken up a $1-million stolen camper ring and arrested two Medicine Hat men they say are responsible. ALERT issued the release Tuesday stating they had charged Nathan Herter and Matthew Hillier, both aged 36, both of Medicine Hat, following a three-month investigation that spanned three provinces. Police allege the men operated a “complex, co-ordinated scheme” to steal recreational vehicles and holiday trailers and other items, then resell them with altered vehicle identification markings. A total of 13 campers found throughout British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan were detailed in the release, but authorities believe others may still be in the hands of unwitting buyers. Tools, motorbikes and other property were also taken into custody. “This was a complex, co-ordinated scheme that undoubtedly ruined many family’s summer vacation plans,” said Alert Supt. Dwayne Lakusta. “However, the impact of organized crime extends beyond the victim, and is a cost that society collectively bears.” Police believe the thefts began in December 2020 and took place in Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore, Lethbridge, Drumheller, Lacombe, Swift Current and Regina. Many were sold at a “steep discount” to third parties. Medicine Hat Police, the Insurance Bureau of B.C. and Service Alberta took part in the investigation, along with numerous RCMP detachments. Herter faces charges of theft over $5,000, possession of break-in tools, and drug possession with the intent to traffic. Hillier, who was arrested in Hope, B.C. in late June, faces charges of theft and possessing stolen property. There is no information released on scheduled court appearances. 13-12
