Mounties in Brooks have charged a man and woman with extorting a pet owner and “causing harm” to an injured dog that eventually died, a report to that city’s council states.

In the July overview of police activities, which is routinely presented to Brooks city council, authorities state that on July 17, a woman contacted them stating a man was demanding “significantly more” of a reward for a lost dog than the woman had offered.

At that point, police intervened but could not facilitate a transfer. Later a woman phoned the owner to tell her the dog was dead.

The unnamed man and woman were each charged with two offences. No court date was provided.

The report also outlines that the detachment has flagged increasing thefts of vehicles (21 in the first six months this year, up from a recent high of 19 in 2017) and bicycles (eight). Police were also conducting more mental health checks than usual (79 this year, compared to 67 in 2020 and 47 in 2019).
