A series of meetings on rural crime response is underway in Southern Alberta with a visit to Redcliff by Justice Minister Kaycee Madu set for Thursday night.

This year, Alberta Sheriffs were given expanded duties and authority to assist the RCMP on urgent calls as well as investigate a wider range of vehicle offences.

The meetings will also provide an update on modernization of the Police Act in the province, which began in Oct. 2020.

The current tour got underway Tuesday in Millarville, south of Calgary, and continues in Claresholm on Wednesday before morning meetings in Cardston on Thursday and an evening event at Redcliff, 7 to 9 p.m. at the town’s offices.

Meetings are also scheduled in Drumheller, High Level and Grand Prairie before the tour concludes on July 29.

More locations could be added, a release states.
