Rumour has it… Taber corn in just a few weeks

By Medicine Hat News on July 16, 2021.

The sweet, sweet Taber corn harvest is just around the corner and one of the largest and longest producers says to expect the cobs to hit the streets in the next few weeks.

James Johnson of Johnson Farms says his team has been putting in long hours to get this year’s crop ready.

“The heat has been good for our corn crop,” said Johnson. “Before the heat showed up, we were almost two weeks behind schedule.”

That heat has been mitigated by southern Alberta’s irrigation network, “and a lot of pivots going to keep the crops wet,” said Johnson.

Last year’s hail that slammed into crops had more of an effect on business than COVID. And the impacts of the pandemic on the harvest to ensure a safe work environment will be minimal, says Johnson.

It’s not an easy crop to deal with,” he said, but, “everyone is ready for a good summer.”

Johnson Farms has been operating in the MD of Taber for 80 years providing non-genetically modified corn over five generations.
