Provincial government officials are expected in the region today for the ground-breaking of a “renewable diesel” refinery near Dunmore.

Cielo Waste Solutions and investor group, Renewable U Medicine Hat, are joint venture partners in the facility to convert organic material, such as municipal waste, ag byproducts and even rail ties into transportation fuel.

Last year the companies announced they had secured an 80-acre site adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway and Canadian Pacific Rail line, and Highway 41 east of Dunmore.

Dignitaries will host a meet-and-greet in Medicine Hat then proceed to the plant site for a late afternoon sod-turning.

Scholarships

Methanex has created two new awards for Medicine Hat College students totalling $3,000 in financial aid, the institution announced Wednesday.

Starting in 2022, second-year students in power engineering and business operations programs can apply for the awards, which are $1,500 each and will be dispersed based on academic achievement, financial need and volunteer commitments.

The global methanol producer with a major plant in Medicine Hat has provided $85,700 in financial and in-kind donations over the past 25 years, MHC officials said.

Division Ave. detour

Sewer and waterline replacement work will close a portion of Division Avenue, north of Third Street, on the Southeast Hill starting next week until fall, the city’s utility department announced Wednesday.

The closure will halt traffic on the slope leading up from Second Street SW, and allow only local traffic on the first block of Second Street SE.

Crews will replace aging sewer and water mains in the area in phases into the fall, along with some work by the gas department and changes to the Third Street and Division intersection by municipal works.

Motorists are asked to detour around the area.
