Maple Creek and Shaunavon are on the list of locations that will see fibre-optic internet service installed by SaskTel by 2023, while the Crown corporation announced it will double spending on the program.

An additional 24 Saskatchewan municipalities will see higher capacity and faster internet internet service, according to a release, which pegs total spending at $100 million.

Biggar is one of four communities where construction is underway, while Rosetown and Kindersley will see work proceed this year.

Southwest communities are among 13 in the 2022 work plan, and an additional 24 locations are still to be announced.

SaskTel states that once the Rural Fibre Initiative is complete, three quarters of the province will have access to the fibre-optic network.

Millions for ‘local’ promos

Chambers of Commerce in Alberta will receive almost $5 million from Ottawa to promote “shop local” campaigns, Western Economic Development announced Thursday.

Another $2.25 million will be shared by chambers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba for promotion campaigns, branding and content, promotions that show the benefits to the broader economy of small merchants.

No breakdown of the funds within provincial organizations was made available.

The grants were part of a $33-million nationwide support program announced by the Ministry of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade in June.
