A grass fire near 23rd Street NW in Medicine Hat that placed a number of residences in the area on standby is now under control, though some hot spots remain on 23rd Street NW between Division Avenue and Box Springs Road NW.

Emergency crews remain in the area and 23rd Street NW will remain closed until at least midnight.

“Residents who were on evacuation stand by can return to their homes and will be notified if the situation changes,” reads a release from Medicine Hat Police Service. “Please continue to avoid this area and we thank you for your patience and cooperation.”

An earlier MHPS release had placed residences that back onto the prairie of Ireland Court, Crockford Crescent, Mckenzie Crescent, Muir Crescent or 14 Street NW to Division Avenue on standby.

MHPS is advising the public to avoid the area, and to not stop to watch the fire.
