Downtown assault spree leads to arrest

By Medicine Hat News on June 19, 2021.

A man went on an assault spree Friday morning in the city’s downtown, punching two men and attacking another with a weapon within a 10-minute span.

Police were first notified around 8 a.m. of a man on foot hitting vehicles and yelling at pedestrians. The suspect hit one man as he was crossing the street before continuing to the railway pedestrian underpass where he attacked a second man with a weapon.

The suspect then proceeded to North Railway where he began to direct traffic in the middle of the road.

A motorist who attempted to ask for directions was then also assaulted by the suspect.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the last attack.

The three injured men are being treated in hospital.

The unnamed suspect is in custody awaiting a bail hearing on assault and mischief charges.

Standoff ends peacefully

An early Friday morning police standoff in the Flats ended with the arrest of a 34-year-old woman.

Police sent out a warning to the public at 4:30 a.m. to stay clear of the 900 Block of Balmoral Street. Police were attending to a home on the street to conduct release conditions checks of an occupant and there were concerns about the security of the residence.

The subject of the investigation made remarks regarding having a firearm and threatened to shoot police while going back into the home and refusing to come out.

City police’s Tactical Unit was deployed and negotiations failed initially, though, they were eventually able to safely take the woman into custody.

The woman is facing charges of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, pointing a firearm, resisting arrest, uttering threats and three breaches of release conditions, and remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
