The Medicine Hat College Rattlers Booster Club is running an online 50/50 cash raffle fundraiser to help support athletics and student athletes at the college.

Tickets are available in four quantities: one for $10, four for $20, 20 for $50, or 100 for $100. The minimum prize is $1,000 with a maximum of $2,500 if $5,000 worth of tickets are sold. As of Friday afternoon, $1,670 have been sold.

“The Booster Club does a lot of things for the college every year, for the athletes. Their goal is to fundraise and just help with the expenses that area associated with Rattlers athletics,” said Patrick Sharp, athletics events co-ordinator for the MHC Rattlers. “In the past they’ve done things like they purchased a shooting machine for the basketball team, they bought a lawn mower for the soccer field and they contribute annually just to help with overall team expenses.”

Sharp says in a typical year the Booster Club would run 50/50 draws at home games with money going toward the sport team playing that night. He adds they’ve noticed recent success of online 50/50 draws and decided to have their own.

“We noticed that a lot of other sport entities, whether it be the NHL or the Brooks Bandits, different groups were having the online 50/50s and they were quite successful,” he said.

“We still want our fans to know that we’re here, so we’ve tried to keep a really active social media presence anyways, but this is also just another opportunity for them to go buy some tickets and hopefully win a $1,000 or whatever it turns out being, but we’re also giving back to the athletics program where in college athletics extra money is always a nice thing to have.”

Sharp says the Booster Club is at every event the athletics department hosts and they’re all volunteers. Most of the volunteers are former athletes and a lot are retired, and he appreciates the time they give to the Rattlers.

“They could be doing a lot of other things with their time, but they have a passion for this,” said Sharp.
