For The Record: Community Spirit Awards nomination deadline extended

By Medicine Hat News on June 4, 2021.

A nomination deadline for this year’s civic Community Spirit Awards has been extended until Monday.

Packages for bi-annual recognition in arts, sports, compassion, the environment, inclusion, volunteering and civic pride must be submitted by the end of business on that day for consideration.

Special awards categories are the “Heart of Medicine Hat” and “Changemaker” awards. Requirements and packages are available on the city’s website.

Power draw

Albertans suffering in 30-degree heat set a new summer record for electricity demand Wednesday. The provincial grid operator reported that at 4 p.m. power demand reached 10,620 megawatts, beating the previous record peak demand outside the winter season of 10,532 megawatts.

Prices also spiked in the late afternoon to $999.97 per megawatt hour, two cents below the maximum price allowed in Alberta’s unique, energy-only bid in system.

County land-use

Cypress County will hold several information sessions this month ahead of a review and pending updates to its land-use bylaw and municipal development plan this year.

County residents interested in long-term development and infrastructure or rules pertaining to land-use, can attend a virtual event on June 14 or at two in-person meetings (June 17 and 18) by registering on the county’s website.
