Ross Glen deals with power outage during scorcher day

A power outage in hot weather left 1,900 customers in the Ross Glen area of Medicine Hat without electricity on Wednesday afternoon.

The outage was reported at about 1 p.m., and was resolved for all customers by just after 5 p.m.

Temperatures rose above 30C on Wednesday in Medicine hat and across much of southern Alberta.

That sent prices on the Alberta electricity grid soaring above $800 per megawatt hour, compared to an overnight average of $50, as demand rose.

The City of Medicine Hat power plants were producing at 90 per cent of capacity at 238MW of power in the mid-afternoon, including some for export to the Alberta system.

JBS plant in Brooks was only shut down for one morning this week, according to the company and media reports in Brooks following a cyber attack on the company’s north American and Australian operations on the weekend.

The beef processor said it halted an apparent attack on Sunday, but was required to shut down its systems and restart the technology, while investigating the breach may take time.

The Greeley, Colo. based operation began restarting most of its U.S. plants on Wednesday according to widely distributed media reports. In Brooks, the afternoon shift was asked to report as usual on Tuesday afternoon.
