Power will cost slightly less this month as heat season approaches

By Medicine Hat News on June 2, 2021.

Power prices will edge lower in June as hotter weather approaches, according to new rates for the month published by the city’s utility department.

The default price of electricity for residential and small to medium commercial customers will fall to 6.99-cents per kilowatt hour in June, down from about 7.5-cents in May. Gas holds generally steady at $3.2915 per gigajoule.

Medicine Hat sets its default commodity price at the average of default prices from major distributors across the province.

For the coming month, comparable gas prices are $3.231 from Apex and $3.352 from Direct Energy.

The high price for power among four rates was $7.24-cents from Direct Energy and 6.78-cents from Enmax.

City pricing also shows generally high grid prices were recorded in May.

The default price for large commercial, industrial and street-lighting customers is the grid price from the previous month plus a 2-cent premium. The price in May was 10.54-cents, though the city says most large customers have contract rates that are lower.
