Hatter forced into sudden winter wonderland

After a few weeks of T-shirt weather, winter returned to Medicine Hat in full force on Thursday.

With an estimated 10-20 centimetres of snowfall, it may not be the biggest blizzard to ever blanket the region in May, but it certainly ranks among the most notable.

According to historical data on climate.weather.gc.ca, Medicine Hat’s largest snowfall in recent memory came back on May 22, 2002, when a whopping 23.5 centimetres of snow covered the Hat. The following year, on May 4, another 19 centimetres was dumped on the Gas City.

The silver lining is that temperatures are expected to trend back above freezing on the weekend, meaning local gardeners can get back to planting in the coming days.
