Gas station owner facing assault charges struggles to find lawyer

By ALEX McCUAIG Special to the News on May 12, 2021.

A man facing criminal charges in connection with an assault against a fellow gas station owner in Walsh continues to have challenges in maintaining legal counsel on the allegations.

Anwar Kamaran, owner of Save On Gas in the hamlet on the Alberta- Saskatchewan border, was charged last summer with assault against two members of the family who runs the Trailside Tempo station across the street.

He was released on two counts of assault causing bodily harm following that arrest.

In March, Kamaran – a onetime provincial Liberal candidate in Medicine Hat – was rearrested on allegations of issuing death threats through an online alias.

He remains in custody on those allegations as well as failure to comply with his initial release conditions.

The Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Tuesday heard Kamaran is seeking new counsel to represent him after his relationship with his lawyer broke down.

Kamaran has had at least three previous lawyers.

Kamaran’s next court appearance is set for May 18 and his trial on the assault allegations continues to be set for July.
