St. Mary’s becomes second Catholic school to temporarily shift online

By Medicine Hat News on May 4, 2021.

Students at St. Mary’s School started online learning on Monday and students will continue learning virtually until they can return to the classroom May 17.

The school is the second within the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education to transition to online learning, joining Notre Dame Academy which is continuing online for the remainder of this week.

“As there are cases in different grades, over 15 staff members have been identified as close contacts and have been quarantined,” says a letter to parents from Dwayne Zarichny, superintendent of schools. “It has become clear that we will not be able to provide enough qualified substitute teachers to replace all the teachers.”

The letter adds all students will be provided with online or paper-based instruction.

Alberta Health Services also identified a positive case of COVID-19 at Mother Teresa School on Sunday.
