A city man entered a guilty plea to a fraud-related charge connected to a scheme to bilk the taxman only a few hours into his scheduled five-day trial on the allegations Monday.

Cordero Walper was charged in April 2018 in connection with the incident in which a dozen individuals either attempted or succeeded to file tax returns using false T4s.

Those individuals utilized T4s issued by Walper’s company, Gala Enterprises, at a city tax filing company.

During testimony from the manager of the business, staff became suspicious of the returns after at least two of the T4s listed the exact same income from Gala Enterprises.

At total of three tax refunds were issued amounting to nearly $14,000 in fraudulent payments.

The other returns were rejected for a number of different reasons, including outstanding civil debts or balances with the Canadian Revenue Agency.

The court heard that most, if not all, the individuals involved in the false claims were charged in relation to the incident.

By Monday afternoon, Walper entered a guilty plea to fraud and a breach charge.

He was handed a six-month conditional sentence order.
