@MedicineHatNewsTWITTER The number of active COVID cases in southwest Saskatchewan appears to have plateaued. That province’s health officials reported nine new cases combined in rural and urban areas in the quadrant of the province closest to southeast Alberta on Thursday. That, minus recoveries brings total cases to 55 in areas outside Swift Current and 36 in that city, for a total of 91. The combined health zone saw a steep spike in cases in April, from just five on March 30 to a recent peak of 117 on April 25. The all-time high was 143 active cases on Dec. 6, 2020 The Saskatchewan Health Authority also reported Thursday that vaccine doses now administered number 12,550, including about 800 second doses, among a population of about 39,500 residents. Beginning Friday members of Saskatchewan’s general population aged over 40 can book a vaccination as the province moved to a younger vaccine phase. Workers in a list of remaining priority professions who are under 40 can book as well, including teachers, educational aids, police, firefighters, prison guards, border agents and all remaining healthcare workers who have direct contact with patients. The age phase for portions of northern Saskatchewan is 30. The province reported that about 80 per cent of residents over the age of 60 had received at least a first dose of vaccine. 12
