Stolen fuel drips trail straight from crime scene to suspects

By Medicine Hat News on April 29, 2021.

A trail of stolen fuel led to the arrest of man and woman from Drayton Valley for stealing a truck in Brooks and then fuel in Bassano, Mounties said on Tuesday.

Officials with the Bassano RCMP detachment say they were called to the site of a fuel theft on April 25, and tracked drops of fuel from near Highway 550 and Range Road 164 to a rural well-site.

They say two occupants of an older white Chevy pickup took off on foot, but were apprehended about one kilometre away.

Colin Reid Rumsey, 39, and Tyrisa Dawn Hudson, 26, are both charged with theft of a motor vehicle, gas and a licence plate, and possessing stolen property.

Hudson is additionally charged with possessing break-in tools.

Both were released from custody following a hearing and will next appear in Brooks provincial court sessions held in Medicine Hat on May 12 and 19, respectively.

RCMP Const. Hugh Jia said calls from the public also contributed to the arrests.

“This is a clear example of the impact the community and police partnership can have in solving and reducing incidents of rural property crime,” he said in a statement.
