A staff member at Medicine Hat Brewing Co. has tested positive for COVID-19, and the brewery says the taproom is closed until further notice.

“The staff member got tested on the weekend after having symptoms and we found out last night,” said Kaiden Vancuren, general manager of distribution and sales. “We made the decision this morning to close down and wanted to make it out to everyone to know why we were closing down.”

Vancuren says they wanted to be transparent with the community and are doing their part to keep people in the city safe. He adds the brewery will be using the closure time to make sure the building is safe when it re-opens to the public.

“We’re going to get all of our front-of-house staff tested and make sure everyone is safe, do a deep clean, follow Alberta Health Services’ guidelines for when we can open back up and kind of go from there,” he said.

He says they hope to be open within two weeks, but the brewery is deciding to keep the closure open-ended until more information is received.
