Suffield announces summer upgrades

By Medicine Hat News on April 21, 2021.

A new laboratory unit and a new roof at the iconic Building 1 at the Defence Research Canada facility is in the 2021 construction plan for CFB Suffield, according to Procurement Canada’s spring bidding list.

The facility, built in 1955, was declared a recognized federal heritage building in 1995 as an example of Cold War-era military infrastructure.

On Tuesday, the federal impact assessment agency declared that roof replacement work could proceed as no substantial impact could be discerned.

Design work will begin this year on separate modernization efforts in the DRDC’s lab facilities. According to bid documents, it will be used in a multi-department study of medical impacts of blast injuries on personnel. Construction of the facility is set to move forward in 2022.

Also in the works this summer is a $1-million upgrade to radiation laboratory.
