cgallant@medicinehatnews.com@CollinGallant Power from Capital Power’s planned Enchant Solar plant will help Budweiser toward its goal to use only renewable power in beer production by 2025, the two companies announced on Monday. Labatts Canada, which brews the iconic American beer in Canada, and the Edmonton-based power producer said they have an agreement for half the power produced at the new facility west of Medicine Hat to offset power used at breweries. The solar facility is planned to produce 75 megawatts of power during peak conditions at the site in the Municipal District of Taber. Construction is planned to begin in the spring of 2022 and be completed by the end of that year. Budweiser’s parent company, AB InBev, announced in 2018 it planned to use 100 per cent renewable power by 2025, reduce energy use 25 per cent across its supply chain, reduce water use and source best agricultural practices. The agreement announced Monday will accomplish 25 per cent of the power purchase, and the remainder is planned for elsewhere in Canada, according to the release. “We are optimistic that this type of collaborative and innovative partnership will begin to define the model by which Canadian companies can join us in choosing earth,” said Andrew Oosterhuis, Labatt’s vice-president of marketing.
