For a second year, Medicine Hat police will move their spring auction of stolen bikes and recovered property online.

The initial round of about 20 bicycles in good condition will be offered Saturday morning by Gateway Auction Services. Pre-bidding is open now at http://www.gwacountry.hibid.com and the live webcast begins at 10 a.m.

Last year the annual auction was cancelled as pandemic protocols clamped down on publicly attended events. Eventually several rounds of online auctions cleared out lost or stolen property held by police which could not be returned to a lawful owner.

In late 2020, police and the Medicine Hat Rotary Club also came to an agreement to provide 25 bicycles that would be reconditioned and provided to local social service agencies for distribution.

That required special exemption from provincial regulations that require property recovered by police to be dispersed by specific method at auction.
