Engineering technology students will develop MH College’s master plan

ktaniguchi@medicinehatnews.com@@kellentaniguchi Built Environment Engineering Technology students at Medicine Hat College are using their skills to develop a campus master plan. “A campus master plan creates a framework that takes the strategic direction of a post-secondary institution and formulates it into action, connecting the vision with building, transportation, landscape and effective utilization of the facility,” the college states in a news release. The students have learned about 3D CAD software, skills in digital design and presentation, technical communication, sustainability and project management, says Peter Kelly, co-ordinator and instructor for the program. He adds teamwork, time management, research, problem-solving and critical thinking skills will also have to be applied for this project. “Students are going to have to apply literally everything they learned to successfully complete this project,” said Kelly. The executive team at MHC, industry partners and members from the City of Medicine Hat planning department have all shared expertise and support with students. Kelly adds a plan like this can take years to develop, but his students are being challenged to complete the project in just 12 weeks. 8-7
