A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at St. Michael’s School as a total of five cases have been identified as of Wednesday evening, according to a post the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education’s website.

In consultation with the Alberta Health Services, the division has decided to close the school as of Thursday out of an “abundance of caution.” The school will open again on April 12 following the Easter break, which was set to begin on Friday.

All close contacts of the positive cases have been identified and contacted – the division says all close contacts are required to quarantine for 14 days.

Although all five cases were identified at the school, the board says it has been confirmed there was no spread within the elementary school.

A letter from the Alberta Health Services was addressed and sent to all parents and guardians with children enrolled at the school. The letter can be found on the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education’s website.
