Sentencing adjourned six weeks for man guilty of sex assault

By Medicine Hat News on March 25, 2021.

A Medicine Hat man arrested after police witnessed him pulling a woman in to his car will be sentenced on May 6.

Claudio Tovar-Aguilar, 54, pleaded guilty to a reduced number of charges as his trial on 17 counts related to sexual assault was set to begin in early January.

A sentencing hearing set for Wednesday at Medicine Hat Provincial Court was adjourned for six weeks.

He was arrested in late 2019 after Medicine Hat Police officers said they observed him struggling with a woman at the Saamis Tepee site and found a narcotic during a search of his vehicle determined to be GBH, commonly called a date rape drug due to its incapacitating powers.

At that point, local police publicized the arrest stating they believed other victims could be in the community. In February 2020, Aguilar was further charged when police stated that three other people had come forward.

In January he pled guilty to six counts related to the investigation, including two counts of sexual assault, two counts of unlawful confinement and a single charge of voyeurism.
