Lynn Macwilliam, who ran for provincial and federal politics in Alberta, died recently at 68.
Lynn Macwilliam, who ran to represent the Brooks-Medicine Hat constituency in 2019, has died.
Macwilliam also sought to win the federal riding of Bow River that year and had been a Town of Bassano councillor.
An obituary for (Kathryn) Lynn Macwilliam states she died on Feb. 24 at age 68, according to Thom’s Funeral and Reception Centre in Duchess, Alta.
No cause of death was provided.
Her passing only became widely known after Alberta New Democrat Leader Rachel Notley paid tribute to the former party candidate this week.
“For decades, Lynn was a committed community advocate,” Notley wrote. “Her long career in politics included candidacy at every level of government. She was a proud New Democrat and she will be missed.”
Macwilliam had been a federal party worker in the leader’s office before retiring to southeast Alberta.
She told the News in late 2019 that stepping down as a town councillor was required to better care for a sick relative.
Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Glasgo, who defeated Macwilliam to win the seat in 2019, called her a “kind-hearted, community-centred woman” in a public statement.
There are no immediate plans for funeral or memorial service.
