Medicine Hat High School and Crescent Heights High School will both be under new leadership this July.

Dean Brown, vice principal at Hat High, is taking over for Boris Grisonich who is retiring after 32 years at the school – 15 as principal.

“Boris has worked so hard with the modernization of building the culture here and I want to carry on his legacy,” said Brown.

“Having an opportunity to work at Medicine Hat High School as a principal is really, really exciting. We have a great staff and a wonderful group of students and a great building. It’s an ideal place to be and I’m thrilled to be here.”

Brown has been an educator in Medicine Hat since 1996 and was the vice principal at CHHS in 2014 before transferring to MHHS in the fall of 2018.

Kelly Pitman is moving out of the position as principal at CHHS, and current vice principal Shonna Barth is stepping into the position on July 1.

“It’s definitely exciting,” said Barth. “It’s been a challenging time to have no sports and no arts … and I’m looking forward to rebuilding our school’s culture when the pandemic is over.”

Barth started as a counsellor at CHHS in 2012 and has been vice principal for the past four years. She says strong connections made throughout her time there will make for a smooth transition into the new role.

“I built some strong relationships here with the staff, students and I am looking forward to leading our school with all our stakeholders,” she said.
