Funeral services for former Cypress County councillor Art Squire will be held on Friday.

Squire served as the councillor for Ward 1 (Hilda and Schuler) from 2013-2017.

He died on Feb. 5 of cancer at the age of 77.

Squire was also a volunteer fireman since moving to the area from Maple Creek in the 1970s. He was a longtime member of the Schuler Community Association while working in the oilpatch until he retired at age 70. At that time he ran for county council.

“He often said that oil and gas was his career, but community and council was his passion,” said Squire’s son, Curtis Squire.

He tells the News his father was active and alert until last month when he entered hospital.

Squire’s daughter, Yvonne Severin, said that in the fall her father completed course work to keep up his professional standing as a mediator working on land title issues.

“He was so passionate about the county and always wanted to give back,” she said.

A private service is scheduled for Feb. 19 with limited capacity due to pandemic health protocols. The proceedings will be live-streamed for the extended family, friends and colleagues on the website of Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel.

More details are included in obituary that appears in this edition.
