A group of Hatters unhappy with the provincial government took part in the province-wide Broken Heart Campaign.

Albertans all over went to their United Conservative Party MLA’s office this past weekend to post broken-heart stickers to the outside of the building.

Hatter Kym Porter says she went to Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes’ office to put a poster up on his window.

“This happened all over Alberta and it was organized by the Alberta Federation of Labour,” said Porter. “After this got announced a lot more groups got involved and this picked up a lot of steam in the bigger cities.

“Because of the cold weather I decided to make a poster rather than individual small hearts.”

Porter says the movement touched on a number of issues.

“The broken hearts were to show the different things we were upset about with this government,” she said. “Of course I had things up there about ARCHES being closed in Lethbridge and supervised consumption sites.

“I know people made hearts about the Alberta Teachers pension, Program Unit Funding, coal mining, issues like that.”

Porter says she did leave one heart fully intact.

“I wanted to leave one heart to thank Drew for his advocacy of twinning Highway 3 from here to Lethbridge,” she said. “It was important for me to acknowledge his efforts surrounding Highway 3.”

Porter says the hearts were taken down the next day.
