City police enjoy Christmas without many service calls

By Medicine Hat News on December 30, 2020.

Medicine Hat Police Service reports that it was a very quiet Christmas.

Staff Sgt. Jason Graham says there was nothing major going on and in fact it was “eerily quiet.”

“Christmas was good for us. We weren’t overly busy, everybody was behaving,” said Graham. “We didn’t have anything out of the ordinary and nothing major or significant that we had to deal with.”

The COVID restrictions meant most people were staying home rather than going out so there was not much in the way of drunk driving or vehicle collisions either.

There were mental health calls that police responded to. Graham says this was not unusual over Christmas though.

“We’ve been dealing with those types of calls for quite some time. I wouldn’t say Christmas was any different,” said Graham.

He says in the last number of months those experiencing mental health issues and asking for assistance has increased “exponentially.”
