A fatal single-car rollover was caused by a deer crossing Highway 3 near Medicine Hat city limits on Wednesday morning, authorities say.

The Redcliff detachment of the RCMP, highway crews and the Cypress County Fire Department attended the scene near the intersection of Range Road 63 before 8 a.m.

Police said later in the afternoon that a collision with a deer caused the vehicle, a grey Chrysler Neon, to run into the ditch and land on its roof at a fence line about 20 metres from the westbound lanes.

The lone occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was initially stopped in both directions, but was alternating in one lane shortly after 9 a.m.

Tow trucks began removing the vehicle before 10 a.m.

Police say the investigation has been concluded. No name is being released.
