Medicine Hat man charged in sexual assault cold case from 1994

By Medicine Hat News on November 2, 2020.

A Medicine Hat man has been arrested and charged by Edmonton police in a sexual assault case that dates back 26 years.

The Edmonton Police Service announced Friday that they issued the arrest warrant that was processed by local police after retesting evidence collected after a woman was allegedly raped in 1994.

Dean Walter Moore, 47, has been charged with house breaking with intent, sexual assault, unlawful confinement and theft under $5,000.

Police say that on Nov. 26, 1994, a man broke into an apartment, then tied up and assaulted a 28-year-old female resident.

She was able to free herself after the assailant left.

The case was reopened in 2016, and this January DNA samples were retested and checked against a database.

The release states that the arrest was made Tuesday, Oct. 27, with the assistance of the Medicine Hat Police Service.
