Deaths spike directly south of the border from Medicine Hat

Nine deaths from COVID-19 in or near the town of Havre, Mont. over the last week have brought the total number of deaths to 19 in Hill County, state health officials reported on Monday.

The region across the international boundary from Cypress County has seen a steep rise in positive cases since mid-October.

New figures for Monday show 21 new cases brought the total number of active cases to 376 in Hill County, which has population of about 16,000 residents.

Blaine County, south of Shaunavon, Sask., showed ten new cases, bringing the total active cases to 163, as of Sunday.

Three people there had died of the respiratory illness.

Statewide in Montana, the number of deaths surpassed 300 on the weekend. With 9,855 active cases, the total number of cases sits at 28,500, or about double the number from three weeks ago.
