The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is hosting a walk Saturday so Hatters can get a glimpse of some furry aquatic friends.
The group is hosting a beaver walk, which will allow a small group to watch beavers in their natural habitat.
“We’re going out to their lodge around sundown because that’s when they usually start their evening activities,” said park interpreter Marty Drut. “Right now they’re really active because they’re harvesting for the winter. They’re cutting branches and storing them in the water near the entrance.
“When they come out, a lot of different things can happen, it just depends what they are up to.”
The walk is part of a ‘Riparian Areas Rock!’ series that is being supported through a grant from the Land Stewardship Centre of Canada.
Drut says a small human audience could lead to a more active group of beavers.
“They’re really great animals,” said Drut. “We’re hoping a smaller crowd will allow the beavers to feel more comfortable to go about their day.
“We’re going to keep our distance and enjoy them from a safe place.”
The group will meet at 5:45 p.m. at Police Point Park. The Interpretive Program is asking people to pre-register by calling 403-529-6225.
