Spooky season is quickly approaching and the Redcliff Youth Centre will be taking part.
The organization, with the help of a number of sponsors and community members, has created a haunted house in an old greenhouse building.
“We’re calling it Glass House Haunting and it is a fundraiser for the Redcliff Youth Centre,” executive director Janae Ulrich. “We got access to a gutted greenhouse on Second Street SW and it was just perfect for this.”
The haunted house is opening on Oct 15 at 6 p.m. and runs until midnight on Halloween. Leading up to Oct. 31, the house runs Sunday to Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays it will be open until 11 p.m.
There is a minimum donation of $5 per guest to enter the haunted house, with money going back to the Youth Centre’s programming. A family of four is able to get in for $15. A discounted entry fee of $3 will be offered to guests who bring a non-perishable food donation for the Medicine Hat food bank. The event itself is cash only.
The haunted house is around 8,000 square feet and is full of Halloween-themed scares.
“It’s pretty huge,” said Ulrich. “We’re so thankful to have thousands of dollars worth of animatronics donated by Spirit Halloween.
“Kevin Lagasse and his wife Julie just bought the greenhouse and they just wanted to give back to the community.
“We decided to partner with Kevin and Julie and work together to make one great haunted house.”
Ulrich says the goal of the haunted house is the bring people together for a night of fun during uncertain times.
“We’ve got the go head from Alberta Health Services,” she said. “We’ve got sanitization and separate entrance and exits. We have registration set up so we can get everyone’s name and number who passes through.
“We’ve got our bases covered, so now it’s just about finishing it up.”
Ulrich says the haunted house may be too scary for young kids, and if they are brought, earlier times when there’s still sunlight can make the haunted maze a little less scary.
The Youth Centre will not be booking times for the house, it is working as a come-and-go haunted house.
Ulrich says the maze will take 15 minutes or more to solve for each guest or group.
“There’s so much to look at and so much amazing art,” she said.
The Youth Centre offers free educational and recreational programming for young people in the area.
