The Mustard Seed’s harvest fundraising event on Saturday is being called a major success.

The organization reached its goal and then some, said Colette Eirich, managing director The Mustard Seed in Medicine Hat.

“It was simply amazing,” said Eirich, noting the weather was near perfect facilitating all aspects of the harvest event.

The Mustard Seed is a Christian non-profit organization caring for individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness since 1984. In the fall of 2019 it expanded into Medicine Hat with premises at 503a Allowance Ave.

The plan is to establish a family resource hub and a wellness centre on Allowance Avenue with a community kitchen on the main floor and a range of supports on the lower level.

That commercial kitchen is about 50 per cent complete and last Saturday was an opportunity to see the renovations to date and contribute to the funds still required. The event included a small farmers market.

In addition to all the individuals and the Co-op giving support, there was an unexpected surprise, said Eirich.

While arranging to collect her truck after servicing at Davis Pontiac Buick GMC on Friday she was told by the general manager, Mike Heddema, that a larger truck would be provided by the dealership to hold all the pumpkins. Then on the day the general manager selected five pumpkins to buy and insisted on paying $1,000 for them.

“I was overwhelmed,” said Eirich, grateful to everyone who attended and helped The Mustard Seed achieve its goal.

The whole harvest fundraiser was so successful that it will now become an annual event, she said.
