A mental health support meeting will be held every Sunday at True North K9 Compound, starting this week.

The meetings will take place from 6-7 p.m. every week and are free for anyone to attend.

“We’ve been reaching out a lot lately to see what kind of holes we can fill in the community,” said Erin Taefu. “We’re not mental health professionals, but we want to do what we can to help. We’ve always had this idea of a casual drop-in where people can just come and hang out.”

Erin and her husband Fitu have become increasingly active with mental health initiatives in the city after Fitu held a free tattoo event late last month.

Erin says the meetings will be completely casual, and people can come and go as they wish.

“People can come and not say a word if they that’s what they need,” she said. “We just want people to know that they have a place they can come every week to talk to people, or just to be around people.”

People who may not be struggling with mental health on a particular Sunday are encouraged to come to a meeting if they feel like they can offer support.

“If people are feeling strong on a given day and want to be there for someone else, they are welcome,” said Erin.

With the events being held at a dog compound, furry best friends will be welcomed.

“This is a nice, public, open space that has been donated to us,” she said. “This will allow us to be physically distanced when we need to.

“People can bring their dogs and they can be playing during the meeting – dogs can really help with our healing.”

Members of For All the Brothers will attend the meetings, but anyone of any gender is welcome.

“We know this is a hard time for everyone,” said Erin. “We know many women and non-binary people are having difficult times, as well as men. We don’t want to exclude anyone.”

Erin thanked the dog compound for the free space every week.

True North is located at 1503 Semrau Drive NW.
