Rev. Jim Hillson of Fifth Avenue Memorial killed in Saskatchewan crash

By Medicine Hat News on September 2, 2020.

Rev. Jim Hillson, a well-known pastor in Medicine Hat and longtime contributor to the News’s weekly pastoral column, has died in a car crash. He was 77.

Hillson was the reverend emeritus of Fifth Avenue Memorial Church and very active in the community, appearing just last week at a City of Medicine Hat meeting regarding the future of seniors’ programming.

RCMP in Saskatchewan reported Tuesday that weekend crashes in the province claimed four lives in separate incidents.

The Moose Jaw detachment states that a 77-year-old man was killed when his SUV travelled through a stop sign near Belle Plain and struck a tractor trailer unit that was heading east on the Trans-Canada and caught fire.

Hillson was the lone occupant of the SUV, the News has confirmed. The truck driver was unhurt.

A notice in today’s edition states that a memorial service will be held Sept. 9 at Fifth Avenue Memorial, but with capacity limited, an online viewing of the service will be offered. Details should be available Saturday, the notice states.
