The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association is bringing a fan favourite back for a few weeks this summer.
The organization is hosting Skate Skool sessions every Saturday and Monday this month, including today. Each Saturday session will run from 11 a.m. until noon. Monday will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
“Kids can come here and learn from scratch,” said MHSA member Michaela Burgess. “We’ve had kids come who have never stood on a skateboard before – all skill levels are welcome.
“Our sessions are for all kids who want to learn how to skateboard, whether they have experience or not.”
The Skate Skool events will all take place outdoors at the Kinsmen Skate Plaza near Kin Coulee Park. They will take place indoors at the Bay3 skate park if weather is bad. Burgess says it’s a great sport to learn.
“You can learn a lot about patience,” she said. “You really need to put a lot into learning to skate, and it’s really rewarding to make progress.”
There is a $10 drop-in fee for each session, no booking is required beforehand.
People are asked to bring a helmet and skateboard for the child to use.
Burgess says COVID-19 protocols will be in place during every session.
“We’re planning on following standard procedures,” said Burgess. “We’re going to have gloves just in case we have to hold hands with any of the kids while teaching them.
“We’re going to social distance, too. We do these sessions in small groups, so this shouldn’t be hard for us to be safe.”
The MHSA had Skate Skool planned for earlier this year, but had to cancel the March sessions due to COVID-19. People who paid for those sessions will be given free lessons this August.
