The Southern Alberta Humane Society is hosting an online auction to help pay vet bills during kitten season.

The auction is called the Pawsitivity Silent Auction on Facebook and is raising money for SAHS during tough times.

“It has $8,500 worth of items so far and it starts on Friday and runs until Sunday,” said board member De Seaton. “We have a ton of items from chainsaws, to jewellery and everything in between.”

Every year area pet organizations deal with kitten season. SAHS aims to help the areas around the city, as well as supporting Medicine Hat.

“This is mostly about cats and about paying down our vet bill,” she said. “We’ve taken in so many animals lately, so many of those have been kittens. A lot of them have been sick, so the vet bill is really adding up.’

SAHS took in 30 kittens as well as a pregnant cat that gave birth to four more. All of the cats taken in have been strays from Cypress County, Suffield, Bow Island and Redcliff.

“People find them and call us to help,” said Seaton. “It’s hard for us because we’re foster-based and we don’t have a shelter yet.

“We’re also still self-funded, so we have to be sure that we have the money.”

All the kittens are being fostered in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area. Seaton says COVID-19 has made fundraising tricky.

“We have to do everything virtually,” she said. “It’s also really hard to ask for money because everyone is struggling.”

Seaton says the organization is hoping to raise $5,000 through the auction.
