YMCA gets $40K to help with membership support program

By Medicine Hat News on June 24, 2020.

The YMCA in Medicine Hat will receive $40,000 from Community Foundation of Medicine Hat & Southeastern Alberta to subsidize membership fees as required.

The emergency community support funds will specifically help members facing financial challenges as a result of COVID-19.

The YMCA’s subsidized membership program has been in place for more than 50 years thanks to grants and donations.

CEO Sharon Hayward says last year $207,000 was used to provide memberships to families who could otherwise not have managed the full fee. The memberships provide access to health and fitness programs helping people reach their full potential.

Hayward says the funding is particularly important this year after the isolation that people have experienced.

“We recognize that individuals, families and children need access to safe health and recreational opportunities, and the YMCA is grateful to be able to meet that need in the community as a result of this funding.”

Anyone who would like more information on the program should contact the YMCA at 403-527-4426 or by email: downtown@medicinehatymca.ca or southridge@medicinehatymca.ca
