Police seize firearm, drugs they believe were coming to the Hat

Authorities say they seized a loaded handgun during an arrest of suspected drug dealers on their way to Medicine Hat, police here announced on Thursday.

The stop took place May 1 near Bassano by members of the Medicine Hat Police ALERT organized crime unit, following a “short” investigation by Bassano RCMP and police in Calgary, according to a statement.

Three people were taken into custody along with a suspected $35,000 in narcotics, including 235 grams of methamphetamine, 78 grams of fentanyl and nine grams of cocaine, a small amount of cash and a handgun.

“Taking a firearm out of the hands of a suspected drug dealer only serves to enhance public safety,” said Insp. Sean Boser, of the ALERT regional units.

Facing firearms charges as well as drug-related charges is Robert Jones, 53. Two associates, Deborah McIntosh, 52, and Gerald Wright, 42, both of Calgary, also face charges.
