MP Glen Motz presents 175K signature gun petition to House

By Medicine Hat News on May 8, 2020.

Medicine Hat’s MP has presented what is being called the longest petition ever tabled in the House of Commons.

The petition contains 175,000 electronic signatures following a 60-day online campaign to voice opposition to Ottawa’s move to ban certain kinds of rifles and handguns.

That effort ended in February just as the Liberal government moved to bring in more restrictions on measures introduced last year.

Following a mass shooting in Nova Scotia last month, cabinet moved to reclassify 1,500 styles of semi-automatic and other weapons, essentially banning their sale and proposing a grace period and buyback program for those already privately owned.

Glen Motz, who represents Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner, backed the petition created by Medicine Hat resident Brad Manysiak. Motz said the number of signatures shows clear opposition to the government’s action.

“Instead of taking action on criminals, the Liberal government is once again targeting law-abiding Canadians with no criminal history,” he said in a statement.
