Alberta Health says work is taking place regarding many drugs to treat COVID-19.

“An array of drugs approved for other indications as well as several investigational drugs are being studied in clinical trials that are underway across the globe. This includes work underway across Canada,” said Tom McMillan, spokesperson for Alberta Health.

There is currently no specific treatment for COVID-19 and there is no vaccine, said McMillan. It’s important to remember that most people with mild coronavirus illness will recover on their own. Most experience mild symptoms and recover on their own.

If someone requires hospitalization “supportive care” is provided.

“At present, clinical management includes infection prevention and control measures and supportive care, including supplementary oxygen and mechanical ventilatory support when indicated,” said McMillan. “These sorts of existing medical treatments can provide comfort and alleviate symptoms of COVID-19. Most patients recover thanks to supportive care.”
