Masterpiece Southland Meadows officially revealed its new wing of 48 suites for seniors on Wednesday.

Tim Garforth-Bles, president and CEO of Masterpiece Care Corp., says 37 of the two-bedroom, fully self-contained suites are already occupied.

The corridors on each floor are wide and spacious.

“We’ll be having floor curling competitions here,” said Garforth-Bles.

The walls of the corridor are papered from ceiling to floor with murals of gardens from around the world and, of course, the Butchart Gardens in British Columbia.

One of the residents, Win Walker, calls the new wing “fantastic” and says the garden scenes help direct her to her own suite.

“It’s just like moving back into your own home,” said Walker. “They’re spacious with enough room for the

family to visit.”

On another floor the corridor walls are covered in village scenes from around the world depicting a variety of interesting architecture.

After opening the first phase in October, 2017, phase two was already being planned.

Garforth-Bles says residents in phase two have the option of choosing whether to have some of their meals in the main dining room or simply use their own kitchen.

At the end of each hallway, there are lounges with a kitchen and large windows looking out on a lake beyond.

Garforth-Bles says possible future plans include a Caribbean restaurant beyond that lake.

Part of the new wing includes a care floor for 31 people in private-pay-assisted-living, said Garforth-Bles. It is called the Anne Elizabeth Rene Care Suites in honour of his mother who passed away in December 2003. That was just weeks before the opening of the first Masterpiece seniors residence he opened in Medicine Hat.

“She would have loved this,” said Garforth-Bles.

With the second phase now open, Masterpiece offers a total of seven different levels of care.
