Medicine Hat College has hired a new vice president academic.

Vicky Roy is leaving her position as the associate dean of marketing management programs at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Vancouver to take up her post at MHC.

She has a PhD in education technologies and Master of Business Administration, both of which she received from the University of Sherbrooke.

Roy hails originally from Victoriaville, Que., a city of 45,300 between Montreal and Quebec City.

“I like the sense of community where people help each other,” she said of the commonality between her hometown and the Hat. “It’s very different than big cities, like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.”

She said her experiences in education in la belle province – having worked at Montreal’s Lasalle College – will be an asset moving to a post-secondary institution in Alberta at a time when our system is undergoing structural change.

She says her new role involves “redesigning” and “revising” MHC’s curriculum to ensure it fits “the needs of the market” and prepares students for the job market.

“It’s interesting for me, because I did that 20 years ago in Quebec,” said Roy. “Now it’s Alberta that wants to have a more job-ready and performance-based funding model. I’m not afraid of that.”

She says she hopes to make MHC a “central pillar of the region,” which is consistent with administration’s long-term strategy.

Roy said she would also look at more collaboration with Lethbridge College.

MHC president Kevin Shufflebotham says he’s looking forward to Roy joining college administration, praising her depth of experience and vision.”

“Her extensive background in program development and delivery methods aligns well with our own strategic direction,” said Shufflebotham. “I’m confident that she has the knowledge, skills and creativity needed to help move our institution forward.”

Roy begins her position April 20.
