Local man charged in drug seizure that came out of missing persons case

A Medicine Hat man is charged following a substantial drug seizure in Taber this month after police in that town investigated a missing persons report from city police.

The Taber Police Service announced on Jan. 17 that it confiscated 74 grams of cocaine, some cannabis and one gram of carfentanil during a vehicle stop stemming from a the report of a missing 15-year-old female from Medicine Hat.

They say the vehicle the pair was in had been stolen, and it contained other stolen property.

Unspecified drug charges were laid against the unnamed teen, who was released from custody with conditions.

Isaiah Cole Wawia, 24, is charged with possession of drugs for the purposes of trafficking, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of the proceeds of crime and a traffic offence.

He was initially denied bail and was set to appear in Taber Provincial Court on Jan. 21.

The result of that proceeding is unknown. Taber Police Service did not return calls seeking more information.
